Gender Discrimination Still Exists In Hiring Practices

Gender Discrimination Still Exists In Hiring PracticesGender Discrimination Still Exists In Hiring PracticesImagine being a professional with years of experience in your field. You spend months applying (and applying) for positions, with not even one callback for an interview. Suddenly, you realize the problem isnt you- its your name. A recent story illustrated that unfortunately, gender discrimination totenstill exists in hiring practices.Such was the case with Kim OGrady, who experienced gender discrimination first-hand. The Perth, Australia native was a management consultant and had been applying for jobs for over four months. At the time he was searching for a job, there were many opportunities in the engineering and abverkauf field. After a fruitless search, OGrady decided to take a look at his resume and cover letter to find any clues as to why he was not getting any interviews. And then he realized that hiring managers and potential employers thought he was a woman. At first I t hought I was being a little paranoid but engineering, trades, sales and management were all definitely male-dominated industries, OGrady wrote in a Tumblr blog on his experiences. So I pictured all the managers I had over the years and, forming an amalgam of them in my mind, I read through the document as I imagined they would have. It was like being hit on the head with a big sheet of unbreakable glass ceiling.Subsequently, OGrady added a Mr. in front of his name- and was hired for a job almost immediately.Of course, equal opportunity and gender discrimination laws abound regarding the hiring of capable candidates. But the reality is that discrimination still does exist in todays society. Sadly, sometimes you wont be judged on your skills, accolades or previous work experience.Youll be judged on your name. While you may (or may not) be in a similar situation as Mr. OGrady, its always beneficial to scour your resume and CV to view them as other potential hiring managers would when ap plying for a telecommuting or flexible work position. Although its never a good idea to lie on your resume, you should definitely highlight the parts that are aya to win over potential employers.Readers, what do you think of this story?
